Apply for the New Zealand government Scholarships for international tertiary students. New Zealand offers scholarships to eligible citizens from developing countries to study abroad at a New Zealand education institution or university or at a Pacific university. Students from selected candidates from Pacific countries, Asian countries, African countries, Caribbean countries, Latin American countries, Commonwealth countries can apply for several opportunities at different levels of study.

You can study these postgraduate qualifications at one of eleven New Zealand universities and education institutions:

  • Postgraduate Certificate (6 months)
  • Postgraduate Diploma (1 year)
  • Master’s Degree (1-2 years)
  • PhD (up to 3.5 years)

  • Economy class air ticket for me by the most direct and economical air travel route between an international airport in my home country nominated by MFAT and an airport in New Zealand close to the Education Institution
  • Airport reception and accommodation on arrival;
  • Establishment allowance;
  • A stipend to meet basic living expenses for the duration of my scholarship;
  • Full cost of tuition fees including compulsory enrollment, orientation and student union fees (course-related costs are excluded);
  • A return, standard economy class air ticket if I am eligible for reunion travel or home leave entitlements (as determined by MFAT)
  • insurance which includes health care and travel cover;
  • For PhD awardees and Masters awardees where research comprises 120 credits or more of the Masters programme and as authorised by MFAT; a research and thesis allowance, and provision for overseas fieldwork travel to the home country; and
  • At the completion of my scholarship, an economy class air ticket f
    or me by the most direct and economical air travel route from the international airport closest to my Education Institution to an international airport in my home country.

      • Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Malaysia.
    • Pacific
      • Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu.
    • Latin America
      • Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Venezuela
  • To apply for a full New Zealand Scholarship, you must be 18 years old or older when you start your scholarship. This means if you are 17 years of age when you apply, you must have your 18th birthday before you start your scholarship in semester one.
  • There is no upper age limit for applicants. This means if you are 18 and over, you can apply. However, we do prefer applicants who are under 40 years of age for New Zealand Scholarships for university or tertiary students.
  • Only people who successfully get a New Zealand Scholarship need to apply for a student visa. But all applicants should check if they are likely to meet the student visa requirements before applying for a scholarship
  • Each university or education institution sets the minimum level of English you need for your preferred courses, so check their website.Generally, to study for a postgraduate qualification, you must have at least:
    • an overall IELTS score of 6.5 and no band less than 6.0
    • a TOEFL score of 90 on the internet-based test with a writing score of 21
    • an overall PTE Academic score of 58 with no communicative skills score less than 50
    • a Cambridge Academic English (advanced) overall score of 176 with no bands less than 169.

Generally, to study for an undergraduate qualification, you must have at least:

    • an overall IELTS score of 6.0 and no band less than 5.5
    • a TOEFL score of 80 on the internet-based test with a writing score of 21
    • an overall PTE Academic score of 50, with no communication skills score less than 42
    • a Cambridge Academic English (advanced) overall score of 169 with no bands less than 162.
  • Postgraduate scholarship applicants or applicants, who finished high school a few years ago, must have relevant work experience.
  • The purpose of a New Zealand Scholarship is to fund the training of citizens from developing countries, so they can positively impact on their country’s development by sharing new skills and knowledge gained from their study


You need to provide these documents if selected for the scholarship:

  • verified copies of your academic records or transcripts for completed qualifications
  • English language test scores
  • verified copies of your birth certificate, passport and government ID
