PhD Positions in Water Science and Technology at Wetsus University

PhD
Deadline : October 31, 2020

Apply for PhD Research Positions in Water Science and Technology at Wetsus University.  Wetsus stimulates personal development and designed a specific training program for that purpose. Doing a PhD at Wetsus also means you commit yourself not only to science but also to the personal development program. The Wetsus doctoral program has grown in the 10 years of its existence to a prime example of smart, regional specialization on water technology with a strong European connection between research institutes and industry partners.

There are currently 4 new PhD positions available at Wetsus opne for application:

  1. Combined removal of antimicrobial resistance and pharmaceuticals from wastewater
The main research challenge consists of comparing the performance of advanced treatment options to remove antimicrobial resistance and micropollutants across different pilot plants, with harmonized detection methods.
  2. Vivianite formation and recovery from sewage sludge
The objective of this PhD is to study these interactions, the influence of microbiology, the resulting vivianite forms and their effect on the recoverability in order to optimize phosphate recovery from sewage sludge via vivianite.
  3. Pharmaceutical residues and micro-pollutants removal from water with a hyperbolic vortex plasma discharge
The student will build on the existing knowledge about flow regimes and aeration capabilities of a hyperbolic vortex on the one side, and on the knowledge about pulsed plasma discharge disinfection on the other side.
  4. Remote monitoring of hydrocarbons in groundwater through sensor data fusion
This project explores how data collected from these existing, cost-effective sensors can be used for hydrocarbon concentration monitoring in groundwater, or to trigger sampling based on bulk water quality changes. In addition, innovative spectral sensors, developed in the Wetsus research theme Sensoring previously, will be evaluated. Development of new algorithms is required to realize this new type of robust, remote and continuous sensor systems.
Benefits
  • If selected to one of the available positions, you will be working in a new, innovative, dynamic, idea driven and future-directed research institute.
  • You will be able to put your mark on the development of new water technology while working in close collaboration with industrial partners and also with research groups of various universities..
  • You will receive a salary as per 1-2-2019 the for a PhD student as determined by the collective labor agreement : €32.550 (year 1), €37.926 (year 2), €39.690(year 3) and €41.608 (year 4).
