The Heinrich Böll Foundation grants scholarships to approximately 1,200 undergraduates, graduates, and doctoral students of all subjects and nationalities per year, who are pursuing their degree at universities, universities of applied sciences (‘Fachhochschulen’), or universities of the arts (‘Kunst-/Musikhochschulen’).
They expect scholarship recipients to have excellent academic records, to be socially and politically engaged, and to have an active interest in the basic values of the foundation: ecology and sustainability, democracy and human rights, self determination and justice
Eligibility
Students in Germany:
- Students from Germany (German, Bildungsinländer / in the first degree); Application possible before the start of the course up to the 3rd semester; all subjects; all universities;
- Students from Germany (Germans, Bildungsinländer) in their first degree for the study scholarship program “Media diversity, different” (journalism or specialist studies);
Application possible before the start of the course up to the 3rd semester; all universities;
Students abroad:
- International students from other EU countries in the master’s or main studies diploma / state examination in Germany; Application possible before the start of the course or up to the first semester in the master’s / main course; all subjects; all universities; regional focal points are Eastern / Central Eastern Europe;
- International students outside the EU in the master’s degree or in the main degree / state examination in Germany; Application possible before the start of the course or up to the first semester in the master’s / main course; all subjects; all universities; regional focuses are Eastern / Central Eastern Europe, European neighbors; CIS, MENA region;
- Refugees who want to start or continue their studies in Germany in their first degree or master’s degree (or diploma or state examination course, regardless of the number of semesters); all subjects; all universities
International applicants have to prove their proficiency in German. Good or very good knowledge of the German language is required (at least B2 Level or DSH2).
Doctoral students in Germany:
- Doctoral students from Germany (Germans, Bildungsinlaender) for doctoral studies in Germany; all subjects
- Doctoral students from Germany (Germans, Bildungsinlaender) for the research cluster “Transformation Research” ; all subjects
Doctoral students abroad:
- International doctoral students (EU, outside EU) for doctoral studies in Germany; all subjects; regional focal points with regard to regions of origin are Eastern / Central Eastern Europe, European neighbors; CIS, MENA region
- International doctoral students for the research cluster “Transformation Research” (all subjects)
- Refugees who want to start or continue a doctorate in Germany
