The Nippon Foundation of Japan Fellowship Programme is now open for applications. This Programme is executed by the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (DOALOS) of the Office of Legal Affairs. The programme is dedicated to government officials as well as mid-level professionals from developing countries. Applicants usually posses tanning ocean affairs and law as well as marine science.

The objective of the fellowship is to provide opportunities for advanced education and research ocean and marine related fields. These include the field of ocean affairs and the law of the sea, and related disciplines including marine science in support of management frameworks. Participants will obtain the necessary knowledge to assist their countries to formulate comprehensive ocean policy and to implement the legal regime set out in UNCLOS and related instruments.

At the of the fellowship, fellows should have an advanced awareness and understanding of key issues and best international practices in ocean affairs. They are therefore expected to return to their home-countries to contribute their experience to assist with the effective implementation of UNCLOS and related instruments and programmes.

Benefits

The fellowship programme runs for a duration of 9-month which is divided into two consecutive phases

  • Phase One: This will involve a 3-month Research and Training at DOALOS at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
  • Phase Two: This is aa 6-month Advanced Academic Research and Study to be hosted at one of the prestigious participating Host Institutions.
Eligibility

In order to apply and participate in the programme, you must meet the following condtiond

  • All Candidates must be nominated by their government, employer or competent organization
  • You must be between 25 and 40 years at the time of application
  • Applicants must posses a first university degree (Bachelors) in discipline related to the programme fields of interest
  • You should be a mid-level professionals who can demonstrate that they work directly on ocean issues
  • Applicants are expected to be in a good state of health so as to be cleared by the UN Medical Service
  • Be in a position to obtain all relevant visas, including transit visas
  • Women candidates are strongly invited to apply, with a view to achieve gender balance in the selection process.
Application

Interested applicants must complete the online application form that is accessible from the programme website. The application must be submitted by the deadline of September 24, 2021

You must also complete a Personal History and Proposed Research/Study Programme. This form will collect information regarding your biodata, Education, work experience and several other aspects related to the applicant as may be required by the programme

Applicants must also download the Nomination and Recommendation Form which must be completed and signed by the official nominating entity. The form is completed by an official of the nominating Government, institution or other body who will forward the completed form directly to The Programme Advisor, Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea

Both the Nomination and Recommendation Form and the completed Personal History and Proposed Research/Study must be emailed directly to DOALOS: [email protected]. These must arrive by the deadline of September 24, 2021
